Midnight Commander

Midnight commander is a clone of the popular “Commander” file managers first introduced by the company Peter Norton Computing, Inc. for the DOS operating system. After the success of this file manager serveral clones did appear which had different features but maintained the original layout with two panels, using the same hotkey configuration.

Midnight commander comes with a built-in file viewer and it's own text editor (mcedit), which is easy to learn and use, but a custom external editor can be used as well.

It has also capabilities to connect to FTP, SFTP, SMB and SSH servers
